A City of Sadness

Hou Hsiao-hsien’s beautiful but grisly cinematic look at the Taiwanese White Terror events of the late 1940s is turning 20, and UCSB’s Arts & Lectures program is honoring the historical drama with a special screening this Tuesday, February 2, at 7:30 p.m. Through the tale of the fictional Lin family, A City of Sadness casts a startling light on the cruelties and terror wrought on Taiwanese immigrants who entered China during the reign of the Chinese Nationalist Party. Admission is $5-$6. Call 893-3535.
