A longtime Santa Barbara resident hung himself from a tree Thursday afternoon near Loma Alta Road, according to authorities. A driver noticed the body just after 3 p.m. and called police.

The man, identified as 47-year-old John Rivera, had been dead for hours by the time his body was discovered in a heavy growth area. His next-of-kin had been notified, Lt. Paul McCaffrey said Friday afternoon.
