While reading the harrowing account by a 37-year-old brain scientist of her own massive stroke (My Stroke of Insight, by Jill Bolte Taylor), I was surprised to discover in the jumble of erratic thoughts, painstakingly steered around her survival, the fear of losing her health insurance benefits. This unexpected revelation brought to mind two letters printed in The Independent on the topic of health care reforms [“Problem Solved?” 3/25/10]. I would like to ask letter-writer Nancy Ellen Kapp of Santa Barbara how she would handle the interesting predicament in which letter-writer Christina Marlowe of Summerland finds herself after being diagnosed with a chronic health condition that requires regular and expensive medication. Ms. Kapp has obviously given the subject a great deal of thought and we could all benefit from her valuable suggestions and recommendations.—Régine Astier
