Mukhtar Khan and his wife Afaf Turjoman are from Saudi Arabia, but came to the United States in the 1970s to study at UCSB and stayed to raise their children, including Omar and Ala’. They also cofounded the Islamic Society of Santa Barbara, which has been trying to build a mosque in Goleta for 10 years now.
