For more than a month, millions of gallons of crude have been leaking from an undersea oil well into the Gulf of Mexico. In addition to the people killed when BP’s Deepwater Horizon rig exploded, the disaster is killing sea life. The formidable cleanup effort has begun, and much of it is thanks to hair. That’s right, hair. Turns out tresses are great for wicking away oil. Here in town, Salon Patine is doing its part to help by donating hair clippings to the nonprofit Matter of Trust (matteroftrust.org), which is gathering the locks to fill booms that will be put to sea to absorb the toxic oil. If you want to give some of your hair for the cause, call the salon at 898-1133.
