Study Overseas in Sight for UCSB Students

The UC Education Abroad Program has awarded prestigious scholarships to 11 UC Santa Barbara undergraduates to study abroad during the 2010-11 academic year.

Seven UCSB students received Dan Wise Memorial Scholarships, which provide $5,000 for a year of study in France. Four other students will spend the coming year in Egypt, Japan, Spain, or Italy with Duttenhaver Scholarship awards of $10,000 each.

“The Education Abroad Program (EAP) at UC Santa Barbara has again proven its standing at the top of the EAP units at UC by being awarded the greatest number of Dan Wise and Linda Duttenhaver scholarships for undergraduates,” said Ronald Tobin, associate vice chancellor for academic programs. “For the past three years we have had far more students leaving for study in programs abroad than any other UC campus.”

A total of 19 UC students received Wise awards this year, and 22 were given Duttenhaver Scholarships. The awards are based on academic performance and financial need.

The following UCSB students will spend next year in France: Jacqueline Lefebvre, of Escondido; Daisy Nguyen, of San Jose; Trang Nguyen, of Fremont; Alex Salazar, of Sylmar; Annelise Tompkins, of Seattle, WA; Alisa Trager, of Pasadena; and Madeline Wirthman, of Orinda.

Other honorees, with hometown and country of study, are: Vivian Chui, of Hacienda Heights, Egypt; Ashley Mar, of San Francisco, Japan; Molly Neubert, of San Luis Obispo, Spain; Jenna Philpott, of Sunland, Italy.

The Wise and Duttenhaver scholarships are funded by annual contributions to the UC Education Abroad Program from UCSB alumna Linda Duttenhaver. Since the scholarships were first awarded in 2004, more than 180 recipients have studied at a UC center in a foreign country. Each year, EAP students receive more than $1 million in need-based and other scholarships.
