More than 800 bikers turned out for the annual Fiesta Cruiser Ride on 8/8, doubling the number of attendees from past years. An informal, loosely organized event that began in 1982, the ride has gained notice and popularity among avid bikers and casual cruisers alike through word of mouth and Facebook posts. The pack started at the pier and made its way up State Street to Modoc Road, pedaling all the way to Goleta Beach and Isla Vista and stopping traffic along the way. Participants said the event is simply for fun and isn’t meant to protest anything, and allows bikers to show off their custom, tricked-out cruisers. Organizers have resisted requests from the city and police department to obtain official permits, saying they want to keep the ride “old school.”
