Chumash Intertribal Pow-wow at Live Oak
15th Annual Celebration of Chumash Culture Open to Public October 2 and 3
The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians will host the 15th Annual Intertribal Pow-Wow at Live Oak Campground on Saturday, October 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Sunday, October 3, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Although pow-wows are not traditionally Chumash, other Native American tribes have gathered for decades to dance, sing, socialize, and heal.
“The Chumash Pow-Wow is an opportunity for us to share and celebrate our culture,” said Vincent Armenta, Tribal Chairman for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians.
Each year the Chumash Pow-Wow is led by a committee of Chumash tribal volunteers who spend countless hours planning and organizing the two-day event. This year, the committee was co-chaired by tribal member Dominica Valencia and tribal elder Elaine Schneider.
“The Pow-Wow is a great event for the whole family to attend,” explained Valencia. “There is something for everyone to enjoy; from shopping at the arts and craft booths to story telling to the healing circle.”
Additional committee members include: Adelina Alva-Padilla, Virginia Ortega, Eva Pagaling, John Schneider, Jacy Romero, Kristina Talaugon, Norma Lavan, Sarah Moses, Raymond Ventura, and Willie Wyatt.
Located in the Los Padres National Forest, Live Oak Campground is nestled between the San Raphael and Santa Ynez Mountains and boasts camping sites, large oaks, wildflowers, and natural wildlife.
