Who knew that a former pro skater from Huntington Beach could embody the mood, melodies, and mystics of ’60s-era psychedelic British pop? That’s exactly what Costa—whose 2005 debut album, Songs We Sing, won over plenty, thanks to his Beatles-esque hooks and true-to-life lyrics—does on Mobile Chateau, which the Zombies and Donovan fan says is exactly what he’s been wanting to do his whole life. At first spin, the similarly languid songs are hard to distinguish from each other, but—much like when you deepen into any new genre—their distinctions slowly emerge, and you grow to crave their soft, pensive, and pleasant tones. Despite quite a fan base here, Costa is skipping S.B. on his national tour, but here’s hoping he stops by on the way home, throwback psychedelia in tow.
