It’s pretty cool to have a special day on the calendar devoted to giving thanks. But why stop when you run out of leftovers? On Saturday, November 27, finish up your last turkey sandwich and head over to the Montecito School of Ballet (529 E. Gutierrez St.), where SonneBlauma Danscz Theatre keeps the gratitude flowing with its annual Thanksgiving studio showing, starting at 7:15 p.m. Here are three reasons to check it out:

1. It’s a Community Thang: SonneBlauma founder Misa Kelly knows a thing or two about community building, and she’s always looking for new ways to include the audience in her creative process. This showing begins with a meet-and-greet session, followed by a tai chi and qigong-inspired warm-up for audience members and performers alike. Then it’s time for some choreographic games, and audience participation is encouraged—though not required.

2. Like the Best Things in Life, It’s Free: While others fight the post-Thanksgiving slump with retail therapy, you can enjoy the evening without spending a dime. Kelly calls the showing her “Thanksgiving gift,” and she goes all in to make it a great one, sharing everything from structured improvisations to dances currently in the making. Stephen Kelly and Ray Tischer will contribute music and movement, while Santa Barbara City College students James MacMahon and Kevin Deelen will perform an excerpt from a work in progress. Who says the holidays have to hurt your wallet?

3. Think of It as an Appetizer: Among her many projects, one that Kelly’s preparing for is the first annual SB-ADaPT Festival, a showcase for experimental dance and physical theater planned for June 2011. This showing is a chance to learn more about the festival and check out the kind of material Kelly hopes to champion.
