Carp to Install LED Street Lights

The City of Carpinteria will replace all its existing sodium halide street lights with LEDs, reducing its consumption of kilowatt hours by two-thirds and saving up to $20,000 a year, according to Parks czar Matt Roberts. Roberts said the initial cost of an LED bulb system was about $100 per light more than existing lights, but because they lasted much longer — 10 years — they were a good investment. Roberts said the LED technology has evolved enormously over the last five years, and that the palette of hues and colors has expanded. LEDs, he noted, do not generate nearly as much heat as standard streetlights.
