Rincon Classic Not Running This Weekend
Annual Surf Contest Remains On Call for Next Week and Beyond
The 30th Annual Rincon Classic surf contest will not run this weekend. Contest director Chris Keet announced Wednesday afternoon that, due to a less-than-inspiring surf forecast and fairly brutal wind conditions, the hugely popular two-day waveriding competition at the end of Bates Road will not be held on its second waiting weekend. “The waves look like they are going to be painfully small this weekend, so we are postponing until at least January 19 and 20,” explained Keet. “Right now, that weekend isn’t looking great either, but we will see. Stay tuned.”
The Classic, which is put on each year by Keet and his company Surf Happens, along with an assortment of other big-name sponsors such as Channel Islands Surfboards and Quiksilver, has eight consecutive waiting weekends throughout the winter during which organizers aim to call the contest for the weekend that surf conditions look most promising. The first waiting weekend was January 5 and 6. The final weekend that the contest may be held is February 23 and 24.
