Rincon Classic on Hold Again

Looks like Groundhog Day fever struck the Rincon Classic this week as, once again, organizers of the annual surf competition have opted not to run the contest this weekend. Citing yet another sub-par surf forecast, contest director Chris Keet announced Wednesday afternoon that the Classic will not be held this weekend. The contest has been “on-call” since early January, but, thus far, Mother Nature has not cooperated and delivered the waves and weather necessary.

Frustrated but hopeful, Keet explained that the long-term forecast does look promising for the week ahead. The two-day competition, which pits Santa Barbara area surfers of all ages against one another in the fabled waters off Rincon Point, is permitted to run, proper surf conditions permitting, any weekend in January or February.

Currently, only two weekends remain in the approved waiting period, though an event permit extension may be applied for from California State Parks should Mother Nature continue to disappoint. “We thank everyone for their patience, and remember to pray for surf!” said Keet, adding that he has already started the extension process just in case.
