Hash Oil Production Lands Man Behind Bars

Matthew Bacon Arrested After Causing Explosion in Isla Vista Apartment

A man authorities said was making hashish oil from marijuana plants when an explosion caused a flash fire in Isla Vista in December pleaded to manufacturing hash oil plus the use of a deadly weapon, which makes the charge a strike, according to Senior Deputy District Attorney Mary Barron.

As part of his plea, Mathew Bacon will be on five years of probation, serve 90 days in jail, and spend one year in a residential treatment program, said Barron, who dismissed an arson charge.

The flash fire was out by the time firefighters arrived to the apartment around 9 p.m. on December 8. There was moderate damage to the kitchen, and the windows and a sliding glass door has been blown out, according to fire department officials. Bacon received hospital treatment for minor burns to his face and arm.
