Santa Barbara Crime Blotter, 2/12 – 2/18

The Santa Barbara Independent’s crime blotter comes from a collection of arrest reports made available to the media by the SBPD. It’s a roundup of notable crimes and arrests that occurred in the City of Santa Barbara over the past week. The following narratives are provided by responding officers, and the names of suspects have been omitted because they have been arrested but not convicted of any crimes.

2/12; 8 a.m.; 306 Apple Grove Lane: Two men were arrested for grand theft after a judge signed a warrant to search their house on 2/11. Among the stolen items recovered were a MacBook Pro, an iPhone, and some “Dre” headphones. Police also recovered a paint marker used for tagging. According to the report, one of the suspects admitted to committing several acts of graffiti vandalism around the Calle Real and La Cumbre area in the week prior.

2/13; 2:14 p.m.; 118 East Figueroa Street: A woman entered the downtown courthouse with no shoes on. According to the report, the woman did not have a court case and was asked to leave. She went outside and was allegedly “yelling and screaming” at pedestrians, asking them to give her their shoes. She was arrested for disturbing the peace.

2/15; 7:10 p.m.; South Canada Street: An officer working on the nightlife enforcement team noticed an unattended bicycle outside a mobile home known as a “narcotics hangout.” A man emerged from the trailer and was followed by police. He was stopped for failing to have a white light affixed to the front of his bicycle. While being questioned, the man voluntarily produced a bindle with 0.3 grams of methamphetamine. He was arrested on possession charges.

2/16; 1:58 p.m.; 800 State Street: A plainclothes officer in an unmarked vehicle spotted a known parolee. The officer conducted a compliance check and found that the man was in violation of his parole. When the suspect was handcuffed, he threatened to kill the police. The parolee tried to run away with his handcuffs still on. He was chased and pushed from behind and, according to the report, “his momentum carried him into a trash can.”

2/16; 5:45 p.m.; 900 East Montecito Street: A man riding a bicycle was spotted by a patrol officer who knew him to be on felony probation. When the officer initiated a traffic stop, the man tried to flee the officers. During the chase, the man dropped “several large black bags on the ground.” The man was apprehended, and the bags were recovered and found to contain approximately 19.7 ounces of marijuana.

2/17; 6:19 p.m.; 530 West Cota Street: An officer working gang suppression responded to a report of a fight. Upon arrival, the officer witnessed “people pacing in all different directions.” He spotted a man he knew to be an active gang member and parolee running from the scene. The officer chased the man in his vehicle and on foot. Upon catching up to the man, the officer thought he would flee again and deployed his Taser in order to handcuff him.

2/17; 1:05 a.m.; 500 North Milpas Street: A man was arrested for public intoxication after allegedly “challenging customers at Jack in the Box.”
