“Don’t you want a real photographer?” was Paul Wellman’s response to Indy Editor in Chief Marianne Partridge when she tapped him in 2002 to take over the reins as the paper’s sole staff shooter. But as we all know, when you come to a fork in the road, it’s always best to take it, so what Wellman lacked in formal schooling he soon made up for with the full-time education the paper offers. Twelve years of courtrooms and concerts, portraits and protests, foods and drinks, lectures and S.B. government — not to mention trips to the Channel Islands via planes, trains, and bicycles — and Wellman said, “I think I’m starting to get the hang of this.”
