Motorists may see thousands of AIDS/LifeCycle-ists coming down county roads through Friday.

Thousands of cyclists on the AIDS/LifeCycle ride drop down into Santa Maria’s Preisker Park via State Route 227 on Wednesday at the end of Day 4 of a ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles. The 545-mile bicycle trek, which raises funds and awareness for HIV/AIDS-related services, continues along State Route 1 to Lompoc’s River Park on Thursday. From there, the riders head out the 246 and 1, and down the 101 through Santa Barbara on Friday, destined for campsites at San Buenaventura State Beach. Saturday’s ride takes them along the Pacific Coast Highway through Malibu and ending at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles.

About 2,500 riders take part in the weeklong event, riding during daylight hours and accompanied by CHP along the way. They expect to raise $18 million this year to benefit the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles LGBT Center.
