I wish to thank the reader who wrote about his observations of the lack of diversity in the special section on summer camps. He put into words something I have been dismayed about for years. I have always naively hoped for a miracle that The Santa Barbara Independent would one day wake up and realize it has little diversity in its articles and artwork (especially artwork depicting children). I cringe every time there is artwork showing the Santa Barbara community because I know by now there won’t be even one person or child of color in the artwork (unless of course it is February). Last year, one of the biggest marches of the year, consisting of an incredibly diverse group of people, received zero coverage by the Independent. For a progressive newspaper this is really disappointing.
