Over the past 15 years taxpayers spent over $260 billion on agricultural subsidies, 75% of which go to just 4% of farms like Monsanto and Cargill. Monsanto earned $1.5 billion in profits in just one quarter and continues being subsidized while 91% of Californian farmers receive no subsidies at all. This welfare for the wealthy leads to a more uneven distribution of wealth and a less competitive market. Foreign farms can’t compete with subsidized products, which leads to immigration into California, where big corporate farms are subsidized and work is available. Support a free market, stop welfare for the wealthy, and lower immigration by advocating against the agricultural subsidies in the 2008 Farm Bill.
