Chris Meagher joined The Independent as a news reporter in 2007, after exactly one year of reporting for the Santa Barbara Daily Sound.
Though he hails from Michigan and attended Michigan State University, he headed west for a job in Modesto in 2005, where he covered high school sports for the Bee. From there, he headed south to help start the Daily Sound as the paper's first news reporter.
With The Independent, Meagher has traveled to Haiti to cover the 2010 earthquake relief efforts, and to Denver to cover the 2008 Democratic National Convention. His general beats include covering Santa Barbara County — where he has written several in-depth profiles on CEO Michael Brown, Supervisor Salud Carbajal, and covered many land-use and policy-related issues — and the courts, where he has covered several high-profile trials, including that of Jesse James Hollywood.
Meagher's roots reflect strong interest in all things related to Detroit sports and Michigan State athletics, and he enjoys getting out on the court, course, or field himself when he can. That all will change, however, as he just began his first year at the Santa Barbara College of Law.
