Citrix Corporation and Bermant Development Company pledged to
build to the highest green standards when they construct a new
industrial park and retail space on airport property owned by the
City of Santa Barbara in Goleta. The deal, ratified by the City
Council Tuesday, capped 10 years of wrangling over the property,
punctuated by a passionate but short-lived effort to locate a
Target store there. When that failed, Bermant secured a new lease
on the land by pledging to rely on sustainable construction
practices as much as possible. Later, Bermant aroused the wrath of
some councilmembers when he waffled on that promise, suggesting the
technology might prove prohibitively expensive. But Tuesday,
Bermant agreed to build to the highest certified level of
environmental friendliness, known as Platinum.
