The Lowdown: Health Topics Round Table is one of those Adult Ed series that always stays current by bringing the top people in the field of health and medicine to Santa Barbara for workshops and lectures on the latest topics of interest. This coming Saturday the special guest speaker is Dr. Scott Fishman, the nationally recognized physician and psychiatrist, and best selling author. The topic: Pain.

“As the labyrinth of sensation and emotion becomes more and more visible to scientists, we’ve been able to develop increasingly effective strategies for penetrating to the sources of pain and suffering, and disarming them.” -Dr. Scott Fishman, The War on Pain
If you’ve ever suffered from chronic pain, or have a loved one who is suffering, you know how hard it can be to find relief. As Chief of the Division of Pain Medicine and Professor of Pain Medicine at U.C. Davis, Dr. Fishman is here to talk about the latest research in pain management and the number of options that patients and doctors can explore to determine appropriate care. Believing that no one should have to suffer unnecessarily from pain, he will talk about methods for overcoming pain that include medications, surgery, and mind-body therapies.
Dr. Fishman is a well-known advocate for the field of pain medicine, educating fellow physicians, consumers, and lawmakers. Joining him for this event will be palliative care physician Dr. Michael Bordofsky, Eileen Bunning (the president of Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care), and a patient who will discuss how she has successfully gone about advocating for good pain care.
