The City of Santa Barbara Fire Department was dispatched after a malfunctioning air conditioner motor on the roof of the Paseo Nuevo theater caused a billow of smoke around 1:30 p.m. on 11/7. No injuries or building damages occurred. Though passers-by noticed the commotion, theatergoers were not evacuated.

The city’s Redevelopment Agency plans to spend $2.8 million on its West Downtown Improvement Project, in an area city staff described as the only significant residential area within the redevelopment district. Intended to enhance public safety, proposed improvements include enhanced crosswalks, more streetlights, sidewalk repair, new street trees, and bulbouts along Anapamu and Ortega streets from Highway 101 overpasses to-but not including -Chapala Street.
