Each year the S.B. Salvation Army helps upward of 300 families, who have fallen on hard times due to job layoffs and the shrinking job market, get through the holidays with its Christmas Adopt-a-Family program. This year is especially dire because more families than ever have applied, yet sponsors have dwindled, for they themselves have been affected by the failing economy. According to the Salvation Army, one family who applied for help this year had to sell their beds to pay their monthly bills. Their Christmas wish is for a bed, food, and clothes rather than toys and gifts. Another applicant asked only for blankets. Without donors’ help, these families face a bleak Christmas-or perhaps no Christmas at all. For info on how to help, contact Jill Steiner at 964-8738 x13 or jill.steiner@usw.salvationarmy.org.
