City Council Lauds Children’s Museum Plans
Thumbs-Up Not an Official Approval, However
Conceptual plans to build a children’s museum on a small parcel of land at 125 State Street – catering to the educational needs of 2- to 10-year-olds – got a much sought-after pat on the back by the Santa Barbara City Council, which officially declared the proposal to be of community benefit. While the designation does not bind the council to approve the refined plans for the two-story, 14,000-square-foot structure, it will help enormously in fundraising efforts for the museum. So too will the Memorandum of Understanding that City Hall – which owns the land in question – signed with museum backers. Various plans for a children’s museum have been circulating in town since the 1990s; this is as far as any has gotten.
