Students at UCSB’s Bren School of Environmental Science have created a map of the City of Santa Barbara indicating projected results of half-meter, 1.4-meter, and 2-meter increases in sea level. Though only the 1.4-meter rise would cause much of Shoreline Park to flood, even the half-meter rise would consume beach areas and worsen storm impacts, but the shoreline would not move much further inland than it is now. UCSB offered admission to 21,557 prospective freshmen from a total of 44,692 applicants, the second largest applicant pool in the school’s history. Applications from 10,085 students seeking transfer to UCSB are still under review. While UCSB admission remains competitive, it has been made even more so this year by a reduction in planned enrollment for fall throughout the UC system. The campus expects its fall 2009 freshman class to number 4,100.

The Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara announced this week that it has received a record 2,900 applications but will be forced to deny 900 of them as a result of the bad economy. The foundation is currently accepting donations and notes that 100 percent of contributions go directly to deserving students.
