Macy’s department store was evacuated Thursday afternoon, September 24, after a fire started in the men’s clothing department on the first floor.

By the time the city fire department arrived, the fire had been extinguished by store employees using fire extinguishers, as well as the building’s sprinkler system. There were significant amounts of white smoke coming out of the store, according to city fire Capt. Jon Turner.

The call came just before 4 p.m., and the fire was located in the southeast corner of the store, which is on State Street at Ortega Street. Ortega Street was closed off until about 5:20 p.m.

Turner said the cause is still under investigation, though cameras did capture the start of the fire. There is a small amount of fire damage to some merchandise, as well as a moderate amount of fire damage and some smoke damage.
