The Indy is my number one source for local news. But you can’t cover everything, so I’m not surprised that you haven’t reported the spike in the number of animals at our local shelters.

When people lose their homes, so do their pets. If they are facing economic uncertainty, they don’t adopt new pets. Who suffers? The dogs and cats who sit in cages waiting for a rescue that may not come.

No blame attaches to people who can’t afford pets. But some of us are still doing okay, with secure homes and incomes. Animal lovers who can, please consider adding a pet to your household. It helps those who can’t help themselves, and you get the joy of a new dog or cat to love and be loved by!

Santa Barbara County’s three shelters will be holding a “Home for the Holidays” Adoption Fair on Saturday, December 4, from 10-4, with discounted fees. Or just come by during business hours, and see if you can find space in your home and heart for a homeless pet!
