The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History celebrates the 25th anniversary of Santa Barbara’s ultimate shopping pilgrimage – the Folk & Tribal Arts Marketplace – as one of the Santa Barbara’s staple events that supports the community.

From the shopper’s perspective, this event is a must-do. Just like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the Folk & Tribal Arts Marketplace is an annual shopping pilgrimage for items not readily found in the local malls. Shoppers get to shop around the world for the whimsical, practical, and exotic treasures from more than 50 countries without leaving Santa Barbara. In addition to shopping, people can take a break and enjoy free entertainment on the weekend featuring international dance and musical performances, while grabbing lunch or a snack at the Tribal Arts Café.

For the community, the Folk & Tribal Arts Marketplace raises funds to support the Museum’s science education programs that serve more than 25,000 school children. The proceeds raised also supports exhibits (like Butterflies Alive! which returns next summer) that more than 150,000 people come to see and learn more about our natural world.

For the dancers, performers and vendors, the Folk & Tribal Arts Marketplace is a venue where they can share their wares, talents and stories. There are vendors that have attended this show for more than 20 years, and one of the most fulfilling benefits, is chatting with the customers and sharing travel stories. The dancers and performers are thrilled to share their talents and share their cultural heritage with the community. This event is truly a cultural melting pot.
