It may seem like there are more homeless people in the city today than there used to be. And maybe there are. But it’s possible it’s just the 100 Winter Shelter residents of Casa Esperanza who’ve dispersed to various spots around town since the program closed Friday morning.
It’s an unsettling time for homeless folks. Even if you live in a house, it’s disturbing to think there are that many more people sleeping under our urban stars and risking an Illegal Lodging ticket at the same time.
Imelda Loza, Executive Administrator at Casa Esperanza, said almost everybody who wanted a program bed was accommodated. That means, of course, about half of the Winter Shelter’s 200 residents got a spot in Casa’s Transitional Living program–which sets strict goals for its occupants and expects them to follow through on their plans for achieving them.
