TOP SPORTING EVENTS: NOVEMBER 17-30

Carlene Mitchell will seek her first victory as UCSB women’s basketball coach Thursday night, November 17, when the St. Mary’s Gaels visit the Thunderdome. The Gaucho women went 0-2 on a season-opening road trip at Seattle University and Portland State. St. Mary’s features Jasmine Smith, who scored 27 points in a victory over the Gauchos last year. UCSB will face another West Coast Conference team, Loyola Marymount, on Saturday afternoon.

The Gaucho men (2-0) have high expectations this season, and they did nothing to diminish them Tuesday night when they thumped Santa Clara, 89-56. James Nunnally scored 24 points, and Orlando Johnson added 21. Coach Bob Williams does not want the Gauchos to get too full of themselves heading into Friday night’s game against Westmont College (2-1). Williams says John Moore’s Warriors are a disciplined and well-coached team. Preston Branson, a 6’3” junior guard, is averaging 17 points a game for Westmont. He was the Golden State Athletic Conference’s leading scorer last year.

Westmont’s women will take a 4-0 record into their Saturday game against Lubbock Christian. The Warriors did lose an exhibition game to USC, but the margin was just 12 points (77-65), and Westmont junior Tugce Canitez, a forward from Turkey, put up 33 points and snagged nine rebounds against the Trojans, ranked in the top 25 on Division 1 polls.

SBCC’s soccer teams received their assignments in the first round of the Southern California Regional playoffs. They will play both games Saturday at Westmont’s Thorrington Field. The Vaquero men (15-1-4) are seeded No. 3 and will face L.A. Harbor at 11 a.m. The No. 2-seeded Santa Barbara women (16-2) will take on San Bernardino Valley at 2 p.m. Both SBCC teams are guided by John Sisterson, the Western State Conference coach of the year.

In high school playoffs, Dos Pueblos was swept by Los Alamitos in the CIF Division 1 volleyball semifinals. Santa Barbara High defeated Los Alamitos 14-4 in the Division 2 girls tennis quarterfinals, and the Dons will host El Dorado in the semifinals Thursday afternoon. Bishop Diego, Carpinteria, and Dos Pueblos are bound for the football playoffs Friday night.

The boys cross-country team from Dos Pueblos will race in the CIF Division 2 finals at 9:25 a.m. Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. DP’s Adeline Zerrenner qualified as an individual for the girls final.
