The Mutineers

The holidays are a time to celebrate, and no one knows more about throwing a party than The Mutineers. The Santa Barbara–based folk rockers have made a name for themselves by way of their live show, which delivers a potent and buoyant mix of Americana, folk, and good ole-fashioned bar rock. Better still, the band and its label-cum-collective, Mutiny Studios, is all about upping the ante. Earlier this year, the crew took to the Creekside for its inaugural Summertime Jamboree, a day-long party filled with music, food, and friends. And this Sunday, December 11, at 6 p.m., they’re taking on SOhO Restaurant & Music Club for a holiday soirée unlike any other. In addition to a wealth of diverse live music acts, the evening will feature vendors toting locally made goods, free (while supplies last) grub, and a whole lot of fun holiday-themed contests and goodies. Below, we run through just a few of the reasons to check it out. For info and tickets, call 962-7776 or visit sohosb.com.

1. The Tunes: Sunday’s scheduled performers truly offer something for everyone. S.B. rockers Naked Walrus, The Phantom Pomps, Big Jugs, and Holdfast Rifle Company will all plug in, Playback’s DJ Tucker will spin records, and UCSB Music Department mainstay Annie Thompson will bring the classical edge. “We’re really excited about some of the musical collaborations that have formed between musicians who have been working around Santa Barbara for a while now but never actually worked together on a song before, including country, rock, classical, and opera performers,” said Mutiny Studios mastermind Brian Mathusek. “It’s going to be magical!”

2. The Vibe: “The Mutineers are a festive bunch. We want you to toss your worries out the window and join us for one night of merriment,” Mathusek enthused. “We want you to sing and dance, or holler and stomp your feet: whatever makes you feel good. We also get a little sentimental sometimes, so we might want to hug you and tell you we love you at some point, or you may catch yourself swaying arm-in-arm with a stranger at one of our shows.”

3. The Extracurriculars: In addition, attendees are encouraged to come in full holiday-themed attire. The Mutiny Studios folks will have a photo booth on hand to capture all the zany action. And if you want to go all out, you might even come home with some loot, as they’ll host an ugly sweater contest, too.
