A story (Baby Sue is fictional; Cathy Murillo is not): Cathy Murillo got elected to the Santa Barbara City Council about the same time Baby Sue started to sit up. By the time Cathy took her seat, we noticed a peculiar and particular resemblance between the two. Baby Sue sits in her chair and looks at us with a sudden and spontaneous smile that illumines her fact bright than any sunrise, slaps her hands together for the sheer celebration of it, and bounces up and down just a tad to make sure this is a whole body exclamation. Oh yes, and a gurgle burble or two of how yes, what a yummy day this is, just in case you were distracted and missed anything. I’ll have some of that backyard barbeque fresh baked corn, please, with a wee bit too much butter.

When the council was about to pass a resolution that Cathy favored, with a twinkle in her eye, she oh-so-slightly bounced in her seat, her hands not on the table but cast snugly straight out in front of herself with excitedly clasped fists of “Oh, yes,” and a radiant sunshine smile on her face. Follow up that backyard feast with some homemade ice cream and board games, please.

We notice also that she fails no test for research, intelligence, and a concern for The People in her questions and comments. Her élan, hopefully, can transform the current context and contest between the Republican Party and the Democratic Party on the council to one of the people party mixer. I will have some of that election season soiree hummus, please.

We hope that Cathy and Baby Sue each continue to exude life filled with enthusiasm. They both bring wonder and excitement to our lives, and make us grateful and proud.
