• Ahilan T. Arulanantham, =Deputy Legal Director of the ACLU of Southern California. He will speak on: “The National Defense Authorization Act, Targeted Killing and the State Secrets Doctrine: Why You Should Be Very Troubled by the Obama Administration’s National Security Policies.”

• Richard Flacks, Research Professor of Sociology at UCSB. He will speak on: “The White House vs. the Bill of Rights: Historical and Political Contexts.”

• The moderator will be UCSB Prof. Cedric Robinson.

There will be an audience question and answer period following the presentations.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS:

Ahilan T. Arulanantham is the Deputy Legal Director at the ACLU of Southern California, where he focuses on immigrants’ rights and national security litigation. In 2007, he was named one of California Lawyer Magazine’s “Lawyers of the Year“ for his work in that area, and has repeatedly been named one of the Daily Journal’s Top 100 Lawyers in California. He has served as a Lecturer in Law at the University of Chicago Law School, where he taught a course on Preventive Detention. Mr. Arulanantham is a former law clerk to the Honorable Stephen Reinhardt, a graduate of Yale Law School, and a graduate of Oxford University, which he attended as a Marshall Scholar.

Richard Flacks is research professor of Sociology at UCSB, where he’s been a faculty member since 1969. He has written extensively on the history and fate of protest and social movements in the US. He has served on the ACLU Board of Directors in Santa Barbara (and much earlier in Chicago). His weekly radio show “Culture of Protest” on KCSB is about to observe its 30th anniversary.
