Efforts to spruce up the Chromatic Gate gained traction recently with two separate donations of $10,000. Built in 1991 by Herbert Bayer, the 21-foot high, 12.5-ton steel sculpture — because of its proximity to the ocean on Cabrillo Boulevard — has been suffering from rust and faded, peeling paint, but the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission and Restore Our Rainbow (ROR) have teamed up to raise money for repainting and future repairs. The groups plan on meeting their $50,000 goal by getting businesses involved and holding fundraisers.
