Conviviality Lost
I’ve followed the story of the Big Yellow House ever since it closed down several years ago. Not being a resident of Santa Barbara didn’t make any difference to me. I loved stopping in for breakfast with friends or by myself. The food was great and the service was friendly.
Well, those days are over, unfortunately. I read your recent article about the house being sold and the buyer is looking for retail tenants. I must admit I had dreams of purchasing the house myself. Maybe it makes good business sense to rent it out to, say, retail stores or small businesses, but if I had purchased the house I would have restored it to its glory days of being a restaurant, and why not! People don’t need to buy furniture every day, but they need to eat!
There’s just something about having a good meal with friends or new acquaintances that leaves a lasting memory. You don’t get the same feeling when you walk out of a store with a lazy boy recliner!
