Sports Highlights: August 1-5
The Santa Barbara Foresters found good luck in the visit of Team Vegas last week. It started on Thursday night up the coast, as Team Vegas defeated the San Luis Obispo Blues 2-1, leaving the Blues with a record of 20-10 in the California Collegiate League. The Foresters, 17-10, had three games left to play – against Team Vegas at UCSB. The home team won them all – by scores of 5-1, 13-4 and 5-3 – to claim a share of the CCL championship, their 19th in 20 years.
The Foresters, 33-14 overall, will take a nine-game winning streak into the 78th National Baseball Congress World Series at Wichita, Kansas. As the defending champions, they will play the featured game Wednesday, August 1, against the Austin (Texas) Gold Sox at 5:30 p.m., Pacific time. Game times are subject to change depending on weather conditions and the outcome of other games. There are 32 teams in the double-elimination tournament.
The winner of Wednesday’s game will play again Friday, while the loser will have to take the field at Lawrence-Dumont stadium on Thursday morning. Santa Barbara’s games will be broadcast on 1290-AM.
The Piaget Silver Cup will be the point of contention for the next two weekends at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club. The Grants Farm polo team won the America Cup last weekend, overcoming Mansour by a scored of 12-11. Lucchese, buoyed the the return of Argentine star Adolfo Cambiaso, won the consolation prize over Farmers and Merchants Bank, 13-9.
