The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved an extended contract with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 721, which represents 512 county employees, most of whom are social workers and eligibility workers but also those who work in departments including the Public Defender’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office, and Public Health. The new agreement — effective December 23, 2013 through July 3, 2016 — will offer the elimination of a freeze on merit step increases for some workers, a 2 percent pay increase starting 12/23, and a one percent pay increase starting in July 2015. Through fiscal year 2015-16, the new contract will cost $2.7 million.
