For anyone wanting to make their New Year’s weight-loss resolution part of a public effort, look no further than Scale Back Santa Barbara, a weight-loss program pioneered by Cottage Hospital nurse Georgia Rutherford. Rutherford crafted a Cottage-wide program last year that she said resulted in 3,350 pounds lost across 850 employees. Scale Back S.B., which runs January 20-March 30, is a free program for anyone 18 or older, with the goal that each participant lose 1-10 pounds over the 10-week period, for a net citywide loss of 10,000 pounds. Participants will receive goal cards — asking them to identify the reasons for their overeating — and a weight-loss idea chart, with suggestions such as measuring food, using smaller plates, and exercising during television commercials.
