The Annual Santa Barbara Brazilian Carnaval “Cultural” celebrates its 11st year and the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil. This year they bring a special homage to their former “Carnaval Queens” and the new 2014 Queen, choreographer Jonia McClenney, from Raiz Brazil Dance Company.

The rich culture of Brazil, the biggest and only country south of the border to speak Portuguese, is knew for its spectacular “Carnaval”, charismatic and festive people, beautiful beach and magic soccer! This year in special, as the next FIFA World Cup will be held in eight cities in Brazil; we will have the “World Cup 2014” as our Carnaval theme and include a free lecture about Brazil host cities and a documentary film screening regarding the Brazil’s Soccer Passion.

The kick off of the 11th Santa Barbara Brazilian Carnaval “Cultural” is Friday, Feb 28th at 9.30pm ($15 at the door) featuring the best samba & pagode group in the U.S West Coast, Brasilidade Band; the moves and acrobatics of Capoeira Sul da Bahia group and the announcement and show of the new “Carnaval Queen” 2014, top sambista and choreographer from Raiz Brazil Dance Company, Jonia McClenney.

The event series continues on the next day, Saturday, March 1st, still in the morning with the “Brazilian Taste Experience” (starting 11.30am) where the public will have the opportunity to enjoy the authentic and most traditional Brazilian dish – Feijoada (black bean with cured beef and pork, smoked sausage and bacon, served with collard greens, garlic rice, farofa and orange slices). At noon * there will be a workshop of Capoeira (Brazilian Martial Art) for all levels with Contra-Mestre Cruz and at 2pm * the Samba Workshop with the award winning dancer Vanessa Isaac. At 3pm, have the experience of “Rio’s Samba School Beat” (Free) with the drummers of Santa Barbara Samba School leader by professor Matt from UCSB. The event series end on the night of Saturday, March 1st ($15 at the door) with the Afro-Brazilian rhythms of multi-talented artists Mariano Silva and his groups Prakatar (acoustic) and Bella Bahia (all female drummers), special guest musicians, Capoeira Batuque SB, DJ Christine Di Stefano (former KCSB host/DJ), and Samba Dancers – with the participation of former Santa Barbara Carnaval Queens Jennifer Parker (2011), Kafi Bella (2012) and Carmen Carrasco (2013).
