In a March 2014 state-wide study of auto insurance rates throughout the state of California, Santa Barbara ranked #37 (out of 210 cities) putting it in the top 20% of the most affordable California towns to insure your automobile. As a comparison, Santa Barbara insurance premiums were almost half the cost of California most expensive city, Glendale.

The study conducted by the consumer-finance company ValuePenguin.com, looked at data from the California Department of Insurance and calculated average rates in Santa Barbara across multiple driver profiles and 52 separate auto insurance companies.

Some takeaways from the research:

-Cities with a more dense population seemed to have higher insurance premiums as more cars in a smaller area tended to result in more accidents.

-Towns with a lower rate of crime and automobile theft also had cheaper rates on average.
