There are more people in the world who own a cell phone than have access to electricity. The UTL-C solar-powered charger is the solution.

Unite to Light got its start at the Institute for Energy Efficiency at UC Santa Barbara about three years ago. Since it’s launch as a separate non-profit, Unite to Light has made great strides to provide clean, affordable power to the world. Over 58,000 small solar lights have been distributed in places where the only other options are environmentally damaging and individually unsafe, if available at all. The most recent invention seeks to extend this success even further. The UTL-C adds a USB charging port to their trademark solar panel/LED light combo. This can be used to charge most cell phones, ebooks and other small electronics, making using these devices more attainable in places without a conventional power grid.

While the UTL-C is designed primarily for off-grid applications in Africa, it has also been embraced in more developed countries. One customer’s testimony: “I’ve bought a number of portable backup battery chargers for my Motorala Droid RAZR cellphone but none of them charged it as fast or completely as the UTL-C. And of course sun is all you need to charge it and the super-bright long lasting LED solar light.” Another satisfied customer says it’s the perfect unit to take camping and backpacking since it has a light and a charger all in one.

Those interested in ordering a UTL-C can do so from Unite To Light’s website, For every charger sold, one will also be sent to the charity project or country of the purchaser’s choice.
