Guidance, Balance … Suspicion?
Many thanks to Nick Welsh, Ethan Stewart, and Jean Yamamura for the concise and sharp “Anti-Endorsement,” recommending a “yes” vote on Measure P. I moved to Santa Barbara just in time for the oil spill, an event that brought out the community in force and stoked the heart of today’s strong environmentalism. Having witnessed the morph of the Santa Barbara News and Review into The Santa Barbara Independent, I felt no alarm as “The Indy” continued to champion all things environmentally sound, taking to task various oil companies when they were remiss in areas of safety and agreements. The oil companies are now promoting dangerous extraction techniques and the use of too many of our existing resources. What insatiable greed! I have long counted on The Independent to provide guidance and a certain balanced view at election time. It is hard not to be suspicious of the continuing recommendation by the paper to vote no on Measure P. Sounding a bit more like the News Suppress. Not good!
