Noisy Motorcycle Exhaust Offends

An Open Letter to Mayor Schneider:

This is an issue that I predict will have widespread citizen agreement.

Please get our Police Department to enforce California Vehicle Code 27150: “Every motor vehicle subject to registration shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise, and no muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass, or similar device.”

My interpretation is that whenever a police officer notices a noisy motorcycle or vehicle exhaust — which should be well-nigh silent — he or she should promptly issue the driver a ticket.

Please also consider 27150.1, which states that “No person engaged in a business that involves the selling of motor vehicle exhaust systems, or parts … shall offer for sale, sell, or install, a motor vehicle exhaust system, or part … unless it meets the regulations and standards. … A violation of this section is a misdemeanor.”

My interpretation is that so-called “muffler shops” that sell noise-enhancing parts or mufflers should be closed.
