Second UCSB Frat Closed in Three Months

UCSB fraternity Phi Sigma Kappa was shut down this week after allegations of hazing and serious misconduct, marking the second frat at UCSB to be terminated this school year. The fraternity’s national office deemed the closure necessary and, according to UCSB spokesperson George Foulsham, UCSB terminated its recognition of the local chapter, effective immediately.

Located near Freebirds, Phi Sigma Kappa was located in a massive white house on Cordoba Road. Its website is temporarily unavailable, and its Facebook page has apparently not been active since last May. The house of 110 members was suspended last month as it was under investigation by the university after members allegedly acted in ways inconsistent with the frat’s principles, according to the Daily Nexus.

The national office was reportedly concerned because Phi Sig had several violations and considered the closure necessary for the safety of its existing members. The university is reportedly conducting an open investigation involving the frat and impacted individuals.

Beta Theta Pi lost its charter in December after reports of hazing and two new members were hospitalized after being forced to drink alcohol. That frat had been in and out of trouble since 2009 and was on suspension status since January 2014.
