The 59-year-old inmate who was found dead in County Jail Wednesday morning has been identified as Matthew Wilbur. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Wilbur was a convicted transient sex offender who was booked on multiple charges including burglary, possession of stolen property, defrauding an innkeeper, and failure to register as a sex offender. He had been in custody since late last year.

On Wednesday, Wilbur was found unresponsive and not breathing in his single occupancy cell. American Medical Response personnel responded, but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. No foul play is suspected, according to the Sheriff’s Office. An autopsy should occur today, but the results of the investigation will be pending toxicology and lab results.

In the past five years, there have been a total of eight custody deaths in the County Jail. According to the department, the last inmate death occurred last July.
