Sergio Garcia, a 54-year-old Sylmar resident, died on 1/8 near the Bailard Avenue exit on Highway 101 in Carpinteria. Witnesses said Garcia’s construction vehicle drifted off the road and across several hundred feet of ice plant before striking a concrete pillar. A passenger, Santa Paula resident Gabriel Luna, survived with minor injuries. A CHP statement said that investigators suspect Garcia fell asleep at the wheel.
