S.B. High’s Student Newspaper Celebrates 100 Years

Santa Barbara High School’s student newspaper, The Forge, is celebrating its centennial this week, one hundred years in print. Its first issue was published on October 16, 1914. It’s the second oldest continuously published high school paper in California.

On Friday, October 17, there will be a 1 p.m. assembly for students, former Forge staffers, and the public, including a panel of former editors. On Saturday there will be a campus open house from 2-5 p.m., a collection of past issues, and a program at 3 p.m.

“We can even boast a Pulitzer Prize winner, Leon Litwack,” class of 1947, said Santa Barbara High Alumni Association President Gloria Cavallero. Litwack, a past Forge editor and retired UC Berkeley professor, is a famed historian and author of books on slavery.

The author of Been in the Storm So Long, The Aftermath of Slavery and How Free is Free? The Long Death of Jim Crow has won a National Book Award and the Francis Parkman Prize in addition to the Pulitzer.
