Different Strokes by Different Folks

(Epic; January 2006) Who doesn’t like the funk? If this
“reimagined” collection of Sly Stone songs by today’s hottest
artists from multiple genres is any indication, there ain’t a soul
who can’t dig on some of the funky stuff. From John Mayer and Buddy
Guy’s bluesy rendition of “You Can Make It If You Try,” Moby’s
electrocuted “Love City,” and Maroon 5’s rockafied “Everyday
People,” to Big Boi’s take on “Runnin’ Away,” the Roots’ already
popular “Star,” and Chuck D, D’Angelo, and Isaac Hayes’s
collaboration on “Sing a Simple Song,” there’s quite a feast here.
Throw in some Steven Tyler, Janet Jackson, and Nappy Roots and
there seems to be no limit on who can join the Family Stone. And
what a diverse, happy family it is.
