William Becker, the founding mastermind behind the Santa Barbara-born Motel 6 chain, passed away on 5/11. He was 85 years old. Looking to give travelers a cheaper overnight alternative, Becker opened the first Motel 6-named 6 after its nightly rate-near Santa Barbara’s East Beach in 1962.
